The Blessing of Two

Part 1:

Sometimes Joey forgot how blessed he was.  He thought that the wonderful body that God had given him wasn’t important.  Then one day something happened that helped him remember to appreciate all he had.

It all started early on the second day of the week.  Sunday had been fine but Monday started off on the wrong foot, Joey’s left foot to be exact.  He stepped squarely on his toy race car and went sliding across the room.  When he fell, he hurt his left foot and left hand. Joey tried to get up but this was going to be difficult.  He used his right hand to push himself up onto his right knee.  But his left hand and left knee hurt too much to be much help.  He struggled to pull himself over onto the couch as two big tears ran down his cheeks.

Just then his big sister Lily came hurrying into the room.  “I heard a big crash, she said, what happened?”

“I stepped on my toy and fell down and hurt myself,” Joey cried as he showed Lily his injuries.

“Let me get some bandages and a wet cloth to fix you up,” she said with an encouraging smile.

Before long Joey’s injuries were bandaged and he was smiling again.

“I’m sure glad you came to help me,  Thank you for making me feel better,” Joey smiled.

  2. How did Lily comfort Joey?
  3. What did Joey say to Lily after she helped him?

Part 2:

Joey hopped on his right foot to the kitchen which took longer than walking on two feet.  He balanced on one foot while he opened the refrigerator to get milk and an apple.  He began to think about how two can be better than one alone.

He couldn’t carry both things since his left hand hurt so he made two trips to get his snacks.  Usually he steadied the glass with his left hand while he poured the milk into it, but today he poured extra slowly and didn’t tip the glass over.  Next he got out a knife to pare the apple skin off but again, his left hand was too sore to hang on while he pared the apple with the knife in his right hand.  Just then Lily came into the kitchen for her snack.  She saw that Joey was having trouble paring his apple.  She offered to pare two apples so they each could have one.  She carried the snacks over to the table while Joey carried a box of cookies.  They enjoyed their snacks together.  Joey and Lily realized how good it felt to work together and decided to find more things to work on together.

Joey learned that being able to use two hands and two feet was something to appreciate.  Things were more difficult when he could not use both hands and feet.  He also realized that having a sister to help him was a real a blessing.  They both began to see the nice things they could do for each other.  They even planned to rake leaves together as soon as Joey’s hand and foot were better.  Jobs were finished faster and they both felt better about the work they did together.

Discussion questions for part 2:

  1. How did Joey come to realize that two is a blessing?
  2. Try using scissors to cut paper using one hand.  What happens?
  3. What does it mean to appreciate working together?

Part 3:

Sometimes we don’t even notice how useful both hands and feet are until something happens that limits the use of one of them.  Joey could have become grumpy and sad about how his injuries were making it difficult for him to do everyday things.  With some help from our family and friends we can manage to find new ways of doing things.  Maybe Joey’s eyes will open to the needs of other people.  How could Joey use this lesson to become a better friend to someone else?  What might he do next?  Write the rest of the Joey’s story.

Ecc 4:9-10    Friends and Family are a blessing

9 Two people are better than one. When two people work together, they get more work done.  10 If one person falls, the other person can reach out to help. But those who are alone when they fall have no one to help them.
